How to Choose a Trading Strategy
1. Identify your trading style
Intraday trading involves entering and exiting positions during the same session. Swing trading seeks moves over several days or weeks, while positional trading can hold positions for weeks or months.
2. Confirm the market context
Study the Nifty 50, relevant sector indices, stock liquidity, volume, support and resistance, and broader market conditions. For derivatives, also consider expiry, liquidity and volatility.
3. Define entry and exit rules
Specify the setup, entry trigger, invalidation level, stop-loss, profit-taking rules and maximum acceptable loss before placing a trade.
4. Backtest before using real money
Test the strategy across different market conditions. Include brokerage, taxes, slippage and other applicable costs. Use paper trading before risking capital.
5. Maintain a trading journal
Record the setup, entry, exit, risk, costs, result and rule adherence. Review a meaningful sample of trades rather than judging a strategy from one or two outcomes.
Popular Trading Indicators
VWAP: Intraday price reference weighted by volume.
20 EMA and 50 EMA: Moving averages commonly used to study trend direction and pullbacks.
RSI: Momentum indicator; readings should be interpreted in market context.
ATR: Measures volatility and can help estimate stop distance.
Volume and relative volume: Help assess participation in a price move.
ADX: Helps assess trend strength, not its direction by itself.
Indicators are analytical tools, not guarantees of profitable trades. Avoid using too many overlapping signals.
